Millau Viaduct, France

On the way down to the mediterranean coast I stopped for two nights in the Cevennes National Park area of the Tarn Valley - what an absolutely beautiful and dramatic place it is!

One morning I got up very early and drove to the town of Millau to try and take a photo of the world famous viaduct where it crosses the Tarn.

Never having visited the area before and so not having a clue where the best vantage points are I didn't have very high expectations of getting any decent photos but nevertheless I was really pleased with this long-exposure image which I took just as the first sunlight hit the structure of the viaduct.

It's difficult to convey just how big the viaduct is but it is the tallest bridge in the world and the tallest mast you can see in this photo is 343 metres (1,125ft) high which is about the same height as the Eiffel Tower.
