Bamboo Scaffolding
Bamboo Scaffolding

As an architect the widespread use in Hong Kong of bamboo scaffolding absolutely fascinated me. In the west the only type that is used is the modular steel variety.

I guess the advantages are obvious when you think about it - it's a renewable 'green' product which is lighter and quicker to erect than steel. It stays cooler than steel in the hot Hong Kong sun so its easier to handle, and, most importantly, it's cheaper than steel scaffolding.

My admiration goes out to the guys who erect the scaffolding (it is all tied together by hand using plastic string) and to the engineers who sign off on the structure.
